In the 118th Year of the City, the dark stones of Arunsun Tower rose. Over time, this became known for its most famous inhabitant—the Blackstaff, Archmage of Waterdeep.

For 900 years, Khelben Arunsun bore the mantle, the power, and the secrets of the Blackstaff with honor. His tower held mysteries of its own.

There have been five others to bear the burden of the Blackstaff since his death. Not all have been the Archmage, nor have all been friends of the Lords of Waterdeep.

Of late, in the 447th Year of the City, usurpers slew the latest Blackstaff in secret, and imprisoned his Heir. They seek the power and the secrets of the Blackstaff and its home. They do not do so with honor.

Waterdeep has changed as much as Blackstaff Tower has not, but money and mercenaries and the guilds are its lifeblood now as in times past. From these walks of life come unlikely heroes who find that Blackstaff Tower may be the hub around which Waterdeep’s future truly spins…
